Cds...
Shelby Lynne - Just a Little Lovin'
The Mars Volta - Bedlam in Goliath
Beck - Odelay reissue
SO... I'm a big fan of Dusty Springfield, and a regular fan of Shelby Lynne... Imagine my surprise when I go to open the new Shelby Lynne record and see that almost all the songs on the record are Dusty Springfield tracks! I had no idea! Picking up her new record was a no-brainer, but yeah... this was a nice surprise. She really reworks them too, makes them 'hers' or whatever.
The Mars Volta... typical Mars Volta. I think I'm officially giving up on them. I really dug the first record, for all its quirks, but now... what to say. Their records are just EXHAUSTING. Their whole deal is that they think they're geniuses and so they pack in 50 billion things at once. But not in a vaguly genius way like The Flaming Lips... rather they do it in a freaking production plant style. So many noises you dont know whats going on. it just... yeah... exhausting... you dont know where one ten minute track ends and the next begins. no melodies involved... just throwing everything at you at once. its like they want to record 5 albums, but dont want to split them into 5 discs, so they just play them over each other. its too much for my old ears.
i dug At the Drive In, i liked the early Sparta and MV stuff, i just cant hang anymore.

i went to the mall to have lunch with my parents... at Chow's. I think that place would do a lot better if they had their own building. the mallrats wont eat there, and their clientèle doesnt like to go to a mall for dinner.
anyway... i got there early, so i looked around the mall a bit. i only step inside that soulless place once or twice a year, so i wanted to see what was up. i noticed that EB changed their sign to a GameSh!t sign.
I went into Hot Topic because they carry records now, and sometimes have some decent clearance albums. There was just one person in there, a girl who was working folding shirts. i went straight past the emo armor and to the cds. the girl said 'hey whats up guy?' when i walked in. she seemed nice. anyway, i'm looking through the records and she comes up and asks 'are you here for the new Bullet for My Valentine?'... nope... just browsing. i almost made a jab at 'screamo bullshit', but reigned in my ignorance. despite them running in shitty screamo circles, i cant say i've ever heard BFMV (?), so i clicked on their little listening station and gave it a shot. its not screamo... not really anyway... it more like powermetal or whatever the kids call it today. reminded me of dragonforce, but less ironic. i didnt listen to much, just some speed drumming and guitar and whatnot. not my thing. seemed like standard metal, but not bad for what it is. either way, i kinda felt bad. that girl seemed really excited about it, and i shot her down. she was listening to Death From Above 1979, which i love, so maybe i'll give them a shake sometime, despite their gotawful name.
Its weird all the little ways you start to get 'old'. when i was a kid, even all the way up to 24 or so, i was pretty on top of the music scene, and was always able to find some gold behind the pop garbage that has always ruled the charts. i would always say 'i'm not going to get out of the loop. i'll always have my finger near the pulse. its something thats valuable to me. i wont be listening to oldies when i'm old.'
that was a lie.
i dont know what the hell all the bands they have at Hot Topic are. granted, its HOT TOPIC, not exactly the paramount of fine musical taste, but still... i was like 'Social D, Sex Pistols, Dashboard, alright... i've heard of these bands... wtf is 'Cute is what we Aim For?' The Color Fred? i know i dont like Atreyu, but i couldnt name one of their songs either. either way, it was all a bunch of crap that i had never even heard of.
i should start recording all the things that make me feel old.
One other thing that I keep forgetting to write down.
I work with a girl whos into indie hiphop (as indie as Atmosphere is I guess). anyway, a couple weeks ago when i had a big ol' boner over the new Lupe Fiasco record, I asked her if she liked him. she hadnt really heard of him, but said 'isnt he corporate?' i said 'well, he's on a major if thats what you mean.' she then said she didnt like any of that kind of rap.
eh? how do you know unless you hear it? thats a kind of ignorance i used to have... not liking something just because of where they fell in the pecking order. i dont think i ever didnt like something just because it was popular, though popularity goes hand in hand with repetition and taking the piss out of something. its hard to really like something that you hear when taking a dump at Target, and at home depot, and in starbucks, and at the carwash, etc. still... she wont allow herself to enjoy lupe fiasco because he's signed? if she thinks all the indie rappers she likes are NOT TRYING THEIR HARDEST to land a major label deal, shes way off.
eh... whatever... i'm tired and need to get to the doctor.

Why the HELL isn't 'Superstar' by Lupe Fiasco a gigantic hit already? I mean... COME ON!

Does anyone actually eat breakfast in bed? Does anyone enjoy that? What's the point of breakfast in bed? Freaking stupid concept if you ask me.

I made my first iDVD! it was really easy and it looks faaaantastic. i wish i had thought to work on it a bit more... like make a 'play all' button, but oh well. great first experience with it.
i downloaded all the episodes of 'Yacht Rock' and put them in one place. Used a photo of the guys as the background, with 'hold the line' as the menu music.
oh yes.
