WILCO! YOU SUCK!  Ok, not really... but wtf!  Here's the issue.  I preordered Sky Blue Sky with the Vinyl and CD thingy the day they posted it.  A couple weeks later they posted a different deal for the Special Edition, a better deal.  I wrote them and asked if they could include the DVD in the 'early adopters' orders and they never wrote back (but didn't change anything on their site to indicate that they were doing so).  Ok, it's alright, I'll go ahead and get the special edition when it comes out and I'll give it to Fotini and I can still watch the DVD... Well it's freaking $24.99 for the special edition!  I guess I should be cursing Nonsuch... That's insane!!!!  I was thinking $18.99 or so, and I'd go as high as $20.  Well, amazon has it posted at $19.99... but that doesn't put it in my ears any sooner!  The preorder shipped on Friday, so who knows when it'll get here.

Normally, I wouldn't really care, but there are maybe 2-3 bands that I would buy a double dip from right outta the gate like this... Wilco!  Oh well... I'm not going to spring for the limited edition.  No way, not at that price.  If someone wants to bootleg it for me, I wouldn't turn it down, as I'm already going to buy the darn thing twice (three times?  Does the vinyl count as a third purchase?) anyway.

INTERPOL... I'm watching you... I don't know who to trust now... I bought 'Antics' twice (it was double dipped).. no, actually, three times.  I picked up that on vinyl too.  I ended up buying TOTBL twice because my first disc got worn out.  I've only done that four times... bought an album again after losing it or having it become damaged.  It's not often that I damage a disc, or lose one... but these four I couldn't live without:

The Negro Problem - Post Minstrel Problems
Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Let it Happen
WILCO - A.M.
Interpol - Turn On the Bright Lights

On the other hand... How many times will I watch that bonus DVD?  Probably 2-3 times?  It's not worth 20 bucks just for that... I'll just wait it out for my real copy.  I've been so good about not streaming it or anything... really waiting for the whole album to hit me at once.  I do have a live version of 'Impossible Germany' from last November, but it was before I knew it was going to be included on the LP.

I'm doing better about not collecting JUNK and possessions lately... Been renting more and just holding back on a lot of stuff.  Trying to break that consumer cycle I always give into... I still have my indulgences though, and Wilco is definitely one of them.

I can see you dilemma, and I think it's different from DVDs because the special features on DVDs are stuff you might only watch once, and most people don't even care about it. But here, its extra music. I'm a firm believer that any bonus tracks that are released on "special edition" cds should be available to buy off of the band's website as downloads.

BTW, I've been meaning to send you this link:

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the comments about the future of the music industry. I'd love to see a MAJOR band, someone on the level of U2 or Coldplay, someone who has the name recognition to do it, just say "eff off" to the labels and self-distribute, self-promote, self-book. How much money would they make if they simply hired enough people to create their own mini-label?

well in your view of the future, there will only be a few bands that make it and everyone listens to so whats the difference? why would they go from a major to an indie? that makes absolutely no sense.

"Why would they go from a major to an indie?" The point is that they wouldn't go to anyone. They'd self-distribute. Sell CDs at concerts, sell mp3s online. All direct. Cut out iTunes, the label, everyone. The only people who make the money are the band members. For bands that are already big there is virtually no risk. Coldplay doesn't sell CDs because they are signed to EMI. They sell because they are Coldplay. If they self-released they would still get on tons of radio stations.

What I'm trying to advocate is a world where there are no labels. Sure, it would mean that bands that are only moderately popular would probably not be able to make as much money, but not necessarily. How much money do mid-level and lower bands make anyway? What it will really take is for radio stations to get DJs who seek out and play truly independent bands. Clear Channel or someone should just cut out the labels and start doing a "myspace music hour" once a day or something. We're in the beginnings of a paradigm shift, and the world will change.

The movie industry is totally changing too. Not that Hollywood is going away. There will always be a place for spectacle, and that requires money. But a family drama? Something like The Last Sin Eater? Given enough money to pay for a few decent local actors we could have filmed that in the east mountains with the equipment I have in my living room. The problem right now is that the market hasn't caught up with the technology, just like music. It is nearly impossible to do something truly independent and make a living at it, in music or movies. But that will change.
