I watched 'The Squid and the Whale' and 'King of California' yesterday... both were good and neither was what i expected!

squid was depressing... but then ended on a high note, which i didnt expect. i liked the use of a steadycam mixed into the film. jeff daniels did a great job as a douche... everyone in the film was fairly annoying.

and california was the definition of quirky comedy. i'd go so far as to call it a black comedy. michael douglas plays a nut who thinks gold is buried below a costco and evan rachel wood plays his daughter... had a good ending and looked gorgeous on HDDVD. it was very feel-good-y, but had some surprises as well...
